RIP Sean D Roberts of Thirty Ought Six

It's with heavy heart that I received news this morning that Sean Roberts of Thirty Ought Six passed away. The energy that Thirty Ought Six gave at shows were immense and powerful. The last time I saw .30-06 was their last show in Los Angeles at the Roxy I think a day after the last 2 LA dates of Lollapalooza at the Irvine Meadows. Sean had told me on one of Lollapalooza dates that they were breaking up and that it would be the last show at the Roxy for the band. I went but had banked on the Roxy to record the set but that fell through. Ever since then, I've been trying to track down a cassette recording of the last show which I know exists b/c there was one fellow who put up his list of recordings and had recorded that Roxy show. Alas, another friend had recording of Eris, one of my favorite songs off of "Hag Seed," which they played at the last show.

BUT... there's more. One day when mp3.com was a popular website for getting mp3s, I found Sean Roberts page and he had 2 songs for download at the time. This was long after .30-06 broke up, this was during the point where Sean was living in LA almost homeless due to the addictions of heroine. This was also much after Umberhulk existed as well, Sean recorded under the band name "Roll Model." After reuniting with Sean on Facebook, he corrected me that it was Roll, not Role Model, that he wanted it spelled that way. Anyways, I will upload the 2 songs that he recorded under this moniker for all fans alike.

You were a true friend, Sean, even though I only saw your band 5x in my life, those shows have had a profound affect on me. You influenced me to the highest degree. You were generous in your friendship by being friends with me, who I was known as uber-nerd for Thirty Ought Six... My condolences to his family, friends, David Blunk, and Ryan Paravecchio. Sean D. Roberts will be sorely missed. Love you, Sean! Start rehearsing for that grand concert in the sky for us with Kurt Cobain, Hendrix, etc...

RIP Sean D. Roberts

  1. I never had got to see them live.
I never got to meet any of the band.
Through their records alone I got a taste of just how wonderful this band were.
I was lucky enough to be able to interact with Sean, David and Ryan through Facebook, purely as an uber-nerd for their band.
It won't get on the news or the music papers over here.
The people around me probably don't know who this band were.
But they created music that won't ever leave me, or those that loved them.
RIP Sean (I feel like I've written that too many times today, something I didn't expecting to be contemplating on this week, month, this year or even decade)
My thoughts for his ex-bandmates, his family, and his friends.

  3. A friend got me "Hag Seed" for Christmas one year, because it had a track 'Tourmaline' that Jeremy Enigk sang on, and within weeks, I was hooked...I played the album through and through, and never stopped.

Once I found Thad's bootlegs, my wish to hear them live was realized, and my obsession was in full swing. Some friends and I covered 'Tike' over in Japan, and it was a violently beautiful mess.

I wish the best for those he left behind.

  4. Hello,
this news rocked my little world at 5:00 am EST. I have so many more memories to mull over in the next few days. I also have a copy that Sean gave me when I last saw him 2 years ago in Alexandria, VA. of the "Roll Model" demo/ EP... It has 3 songs on it, If I remember correctly. "Bridge City Shoot Out" "Stylin" and "You and I".. who would I send them to so that they can be uploaded here?

  7. I'm an elementary and high school classmate of Sean's and we did drama and theater together starting in 6th grade. I heard this news from another classmate on facebook, but would really like some more info or confirmation. How did you hear he died? Thank you.

  9. Wow Kate, since 6th grade? I received news from a friend on Facebook who's a fellow fan like me who LOVED Thirty Ought Six yesterday. Hmm, I'm not sure if anyone is administering his FB page, are you friends with him on FB? If not, hmmm, not sure how you can see the comments from friends, family, and fans. A reporter from Portland, OR is inquiring about his passing, but I don't know any details. When I do find out I'll let you all know here if I get an ok from the family.

Laurie, did you get a CD from Sean of the song? Or is it mp3? I have it only in mp3 format...

  11. I'd be so grateful if you were to post all that music, Darshun. MP3s are great, but really anything would be great. My name's Chris. I grew up in Northern VA and was good friends with Sean. We fell out of touch when he moved west. I only have the 2 30.06 albums, and would so love to have more. Thank you.
